I Already Sent Money

If you think you paid a rental scammer, start with your bank — then report.

If you are in immediate danger, call 911. This page is not legal advice — it summarizes common next steps only.
  1. Step 1

    Call your bank right now

If you sent an Interac e-transfer, you may have a short window to cancel or recall it — often minutes to a few hours, depending on your bank.

Call the number on the back of your debit card or use your banking app's fraud line. Say: "I've been a victim of fraud and need to reverse an e-transfer / stop a payment."

Do this before filling out any forms. Time matters.

  2. Step 2

Report to the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre

File a report online or by phone. You'll get a reference number — keep it for your bank and police report.

  3. Step 3

    Contact Waterloo Regional Police

File a non-emergency report if you lost money. Bring screenshots, chat logs, and payment confirmation.

  4. Step 4

    Get student legal help

UW and Laurier students may have access to free legal advice on housing through their student union.

  5. Step 5

    Build an incident summary (optional)

After you've contacted your bank, use our PDF helper to organize details for police or your bank — nothing is sent automatically.
